Hasegawa 1/48 Spit Mk.VIII/IX??

Mon Dec 1 07:26:58 2003
(snip) I’ve got the Mk.IX kit. What’s wrong with it? Does it look like a Spitfire when completed out of the box, in scale terms and the faults? Are they really that noticeable??? Is the Mk.VIII Spitfire as above??? Got decals to do both in Aussie markings, and can’t wait to start ’em

Other issues…

There are other issues with the Hasegawa kit, in that there are some bumps and lumps that need to be dealt with:
Over the wheel wells there is a tear drop shaped bump which may not have appeared until very late in the Spitfire’s life, or even post-war. You may need to remove these bumps for a Mk.IX bird.
The hinge line on the radio access panel is too pronounced and will require toning down with a few swipes of a sanding stick.
the 0.303″ machine gun panels look like steel plates instead of access panels and will require sanding.
if you remove the pilot’s access door, there will be a 2 mm gap missing once you install the rear glass Perspex, which will require a small piece of styrene to fix.
If there is any advantage to the Hasegawa or the others, it’s the ease of building it. If you are a beginner, building the ICM may be a bit fiddly. There are nice build articles of the ICM kit on here for you to use as a guide. Just do a search and look for Bob Swaddling’s name. He has perfected the ICM build.

Radio Hatch

Mon Dec 1 08:55:48 2003
Speaking if which, I have been told that the radio hatch for the Mk.VIII was a different shape (taller) than that of the Mk.IX.
Is that true? I can’t seem to find any mention of that in the drawings I have.

Not True…..

Hi JS,
I don’t know who starts these things up but someone must lay awake at night trying to invent new myths about the Spitfire. The Mk.VIII fuselage is the same as the Mk.IX fuselage which is really a beefed-up Mk.V fuselage which is really a beefed-up Mk.I fuselage. (see what I mean?)
Clarification – By Spitfire fuselage I am referring to the fuselage from frame 5 (the firewall) to frame 19 (the angled frame where the empennage bolts on).

Mk XVI Lowback

Bob
Did you do an article on the ICM Mk.XVI low-back? If you did, I can’t find it. I went to my local shop at lunch and picked up the last one there. I don’t have one in my stash and since all my pics of SL721 were ruined, I am stopping all my other projects in order to build it.

Rod,
kit is the same for both marks. Take a look at the reference articles and gallery on Hyperscale to see what the kit looks like. If you plan on using the decals included in the Spitfire Mk.VIII ‘RAAF’ 09436 kit don’t bother. Markings for the two RAAF aircraft CR-C and ZP-Y are really inaccurate. The only accurate RAAF decals are the ones available from the pacific Spitfires (pacificspitfires.com/index.html) webpage.

The Mk.VIII and Mk.IX are the same fuselage

The fuselage is far too short, and while some say it “looks like a Spitfire”, I believe it looks like a deformed one. I have built it.
This is a good article on the subject:
Hyperscale
There is a replacement fuselage from Loon Models, but it does not correct the errors 100%, but it is very, very close:
