Does anyone know what the color was of that portion of the fuselage spine that was inside the closed canopy of a Mk XVI? RAF interior green….black…the camo color?

If it was a standard camouflage Spitfire XVI, the top decking underneath the teardrop canopy section (coupe top was the wartime expression), would be in camouflage as well – mostly dark green in the pattern used. Check out Mark Beckwith’s site – http://making-history.ca for wartime shots of Bill Harper’s XVI, coded ‘AU-J’. and Bob Swaddling’s shots of the ‘new’ AU-J owned by Mike Potter.

Hi Dennis
Yes, the camouflage continues right through the canopy area. Also, there is a slot down the center that the back of the bubble canopy rides on to keep it straight. If the rear fuselage tank is used, the harness is set up differently too and does not go through the slot in the armour plate to the rear, but around a welded on bar that directs the harness down directly behind the seat.
