RCAF Mustang I Color Question

Fri Mar 28 03:10:22 2003
I’m building a Mustang I and plan on using the decals from Aeromaster Sheet #48-106 to do serial #AG522, coded SY-L from the RCAF’s 400 Sqdn, 1942-43. The Aeromaster painting instructions say that the camo is type “C” using the colors Dark Earth & Dark Green over Sky. Much as I would love to paint her up that way I suspect that the actual colors are Dark Green & Dark Grey over Sea Grey (Ed. – these are the US Dupont paint equivalents to the UK MAP colours). Does anyone out there know which colors are correct for this aircraft?

Camouflage & Markings No.2 (N.A. Mustang Northern Europe) has a profile and description of this aircraft:
“NA-73 Mustang A AG522 of No 613 Squadron as recorded in July 1942. Still retaining the Dark Green-Dark Earth-Sky camouflage and Dark Earth spinner, it also had a Sky fuselage band and later type roundels…..” There are other details about wing chord yellow bands, et al, if you need them.

I have done a bit of research into the subject, and Joe’s info is correct. But follow the link to the IPMS Stockholm and you will find an article on the Early RAF Mustangs.
These were done in US Equivalent colours, with Ocean Grey, Mixed grey, Med Sea Grey……not as simple as a lot of people would have you believe.
There will be a book on the early Mustang coming out soon, look for it.

just to confuse things further…

…IPMS Canada did a 1/72 decal sheet devoted to 400 Squadron, with specific details about certain aircraft. I’m not at home now, so I can’t tell you if that specific Mustang I is on the sheet, but I’m pretty sure that during the period you mention, the Dark Earth had been overpainted with Mixed Grey. I’m pretty sure that Sky undersides had been overpainted by that time too. Unless someone else can confirm sooner, I’ll write you again when I get home tonight.

RCAF Mustang Mk.I

Fri Mar 28 10:33:51 2003 The colours were Ocean Grey, Dark Green, and Medium Sea Grey. The leading edge of the wing was yellow and the bands on the wing were Red.
This info from 414 Sqn RCAF historian and confirmed by Holly Hills. 400 Sqn aircraft may have had yellow wing bands but before you commit, get a colour photo.

I believe Arrow Graphics produced the markings however they included yellow wing bands.
