I just picked up the decal sheet for the Goldilocks demonstration team, and the suggested colour is chrome yellow (the old USN paint?). I’ve used trainer yellow on my WWII-era Harvards, so I was wondering if post-war this was switched. Is chrome yellow the factory-applied colour of new Mk.IV aircraft from CCF? Does the decal sheet mention the wrong colour? Do my wartime RCAF Harvards have the wrong colour?

Pretty sure all RCAF Harvards were RAF trainer yellow…….

but it’s possible the Goldilocks team went with something different. Which manufacturer made this sheet?

Leading Edge of Calgary has that sheet in both 1/72 and 1/48. I have the 1/48 version and it is quite good, I think. In fact just picked up mine last month.

I think they were all trainer yellow. There is a good Canadian site for Harvards, don’t remember what it is. Do a Google search for Canadian Harvards. The post war version which is at RCAF wing where the IPMS Kingston club is trainer yellow.

The Leading Edge sheet instructions are accurate-the chrome yellow is the correct post-war colour. While the wartime “trainer yellow” tended to have a bit more orangey sheen, the colour varied so much depending on weathering, local paint supply, etc. There will be much debate among the colour police, but for a model, and all the scale colour issues, yellow is yellow. I find that the Xtracolour trainer yellow enamel is as close as damn is to swearing to the right colour based on photos and actual examples of many Harvards and Chipmunks that I’ve compared it to. And, I would put my faith in the Leading Edge instruction sheets, knowing how well Dave does his research, I would never, ever suggest that he made a (gasp) error on his instruction sheet!

The majority of Harvards in Canada were trainer yellow but there were some earlier examples in Camouflage Upper surfaces.
