Mustang P-51B (Mk.III) Interior Set for Revell Kit 1/32

Manufacturer:Eduard
Kit Number: 32-013

Mustang P-51B (Mk.III) set 32-013 contains 63 pieces on one fret of photo-etched brass and one sheet of photonegative instruments. This is more pieces than are found in the model!

This set addresses areas such as the cockpit, radiator inlet and outlet, landing gear and tailwheel doors. The most work required to use this set involved the openings for the radiator oil cooler outlets. As moulded by Revell, the radiator outlet is grossly undersize. After bending Eduard part number 28 into the proper shape, it can be used as a template to modify the fuselage. Just forward of this outlet is a smaller vent for the oil cooler. Revell did not even bother to represent this area. Eduard part 33 is used to define where the fuselage must be modified.

Parts 22, 31 and 32 are for the tail wheel doors. Eduard suggests adding these pieces to the existing kit doors. I found that the kit doors were too thick, so I opted to replace them with new doors made from sheet styrene, to which I fastened the photo-etched parts. This results in a more scale appearance.

Parts 47 and 50 are the lower cowl breather vents. These are nicely done and are a major improvement over Revell's attempt. To obtain the required compound curves for these parts, I found that placing them on a piece of fabric folded over about four or five times and then rolling an X-acto handle on the brass will produce a smooth curve which follows the shape of the nose. Using a smaller cylindrical object such as a Tamiya paintbrush handle, and just rolling at the corners will result in the compound curves required to conform to the shape of the nose.

The interior requires some modifications and for the most part they are clearly indicated in the instructions. The only area where I was confused involved part 19, which is the housing for the trim wheels and landing gear selector. If you follow the Eduard instructions to the letter or picture in this case, the part will sit too high. It should actually be resting on the floor. It also is positioned a little too far aft, and should be shifted forward if possible. I found that the part numbers 19, 15 and 49 which all form to make one assembly are too wide to sit in the area indicated. I have no idea what it is, but I do know that it will not fit without modifications.

There are no painting instructions with any of these sets, so for the Mustang I used the "P-51 Mustang in Color" by Squadron/Signal for reference.

This set breaths new life into an old kit. In the past, I felt that adding any detailing parts to this grossly inaccurate kit would be like spending good money after bad money. What is the point! However, I am now one of the converted. Any little thing that can be used to improve this model would be welcome. After all, how many choices do you have to build a P-51B in 1/32 scale? I'll give you a hint. It's a prime number less than 3.
