Chance Vought F4U-1D Corsair Detail Set for Revell Kit 1/32

Manufacturer:Eduard
Kit Number: 32-021

This set is designed for the Revell 1/32 F4U-1D Corsair, and consists of two frets of brass and one sheet of photo-negative instrument faces. The majority of the 113 parts are destined for the cockpit, with the remainder dealing with the tail wheel and doors, the various access panels just forward of the windscreen, the cowl flaps and the wing root intakes.

Starting with the cockpit, which is a big improvement over the 4 parts supplied by Revell, the main modification is to kit part number 2 which is the floor. A good chunk of that is removed to allow for the replacement photo-etched part. There are two nice sidewalls which come to life with washes and dry brushing and the seat is the usual Eduard masterpiece. After bending part number 47 which is the seat support, do not forget to add a styrene cross brace, as the shoulder harness should go over this brace. Revell part number 1 is the rear bulkhead and has the seat moulded in. The seat has to be removed and a razor saw works best for this. In keeping with the Corsair cockpit, there are a minimum number of boxes to be folded, actually only 2, which is considerably less than some of their other sets. This should simplify the process for some people.

Revell kit part numbers 41 and 42 are the wing root intakes. The six vertical vanes in each one must be removed to allow for the insertion of individual photo-etched replacements. The instructions suggest that a circular cutout be made to accommodate Eduard part number 72. Only problem is, the diameter of the Eduard part is larger than the plastic area provided by Revell.

One of the nice features of this set are the cowl flaps. As moulded by Revell, they are a little on the clunky side, but this all changes once the replacement photo-etched units are installed. The new cowl flaps consist of a total of 22 parts, which are a combination of flaps and actuating arms.

Part 59, which is the tail wheel torque link is too long to fit on the kit part and must be trimmed at the extreme ends. While on the subject of torque links, Eduard has provided replacement parts for the main landing gear as well.

The Corsair is a subject that could stand much detailing. It would be nice if Eduard were to release a follow-up detail set which would address the wing fold detail and main landing gear wheel wells and doors. The wheel hubs could be replaced with some nice overlays which feature the bolt detail around the rim.
