Messerschmitt Bf 110G-4 Interior Set for Revell Kit 1/32

Manufacturer:Eduard
Kit Number: 32-019

Eduard produces two detail sets for the Revell 1/32 Messerschmitt Bf 110G-4. Set number 32-019 covers the cockpit while 32-020 is for the exterior. First I will deal with the interior. This set has been sorely needed for some time as the Revell kit has an extremely basic interior.

There are two frets of brass with a total of 92 parts and one sheet of photo negative instrument faces. Eduard has done a fine job of covering all the details of the interior including a set of rudder pedals and seat belts. Surprisingly, they have only provided the pilot's seat belts and nothing for the rear gunner or radar operator. However, these can be covered off by using Eduard set No. 32-001. The pilot's seat should be mounted to a small scrap of styrene to allow it to sit at the correct height. Minimal kit modifications are required on Revell part numbers 3 (radar operator's bulkhead), 4 (cockpit floor), 5 (left cockpit sidewall) and 11 (rear bulkhead) in order to incorporate all of the photo-etched parts. Kit part number 8, which is the rear gun receives new vented cooling jackets for the barrels, as well as ammo feed chutes, ring sights and gun handles. These parts really improve the look of the rear guns. I found it necessary with this set to deviate slightly from the instructions to ensure that all pieces would fit. The principle problem areas involved the left side of the cockpit. Part no's 47, 60 and the combined 57 and 58 will not fit in the area shown on the instructions. I had to mount part 47 below the elevator trim handwheel (57 & 58). Part 62 should be positioned further aft to eliminate the interference with Revell part number 3. Part no's 20 and 22 should be mounted higher than shown to clear the left side ammo box. While on the ammo boxes, ensure that they are at least 1/8" inboard of the edge of the floor pan (Revell part 4) or they will not clear the side walls. While not indicated in the instructions, I recommend that the kit instrument panel be used to support the new photo-etched unit, otherwise there is no means to support the replacement part. On the subject of the instruments, paint the back side of the photo-negative sheet white. It is not indicated in the instructions, which is strange as the very early Eduard sets made reference to this detailing step. The throttle quadrant is nicely rendered, consisting of a total of 12 parts with separate levers for the fuel cocks, throttles and fuel pump primer. Eduard has provided a gun sight, which is a nice touch as it was entirely overlooked by Revell. They even supplied the two reflective lenses. The radar operator's station has nice representations of the FuG 220 SN 2 and FuG 16Z VHF transmitter/receiver, which mount on top of the fuselage coaming, as well as a complete 13 piece set up to complement kit part # 3. These consist of accurate renderings of the FuG 10 HF, FuG 10 MF and Peil GV in both transmitting and receiving configurations. Parts 2 and 14, and 9 and 16 combine to make the ammunition boxes for the MG 151/20 machine guns. These replace the Revell units which are moulded as part of the floor and are too far aft.

The entire cockpit area was painted RLM 66, with minute splashes of red and yellow. There is a wealth of relief on the parts, and they look good under a black wash and light grey dry brushing, a must if you wish to bring this area to life.

All in all, this set was one of the easiest to use of any of the Eduard sets brought out recently and at a suggested retail around $19.99, it represents good value.
